Okay, I could type for weeks but I won't. So a short introduction to a art form, called 'Pop Art' and to be honest not on the whole a good form of art but it has its ups and its downs. Its good and bad. I am choosing a good piece and a bad piece. Two. But while I will rate and give my thoughts on such pieces, there will be no final thoughts in any art post I create :)
First piece (Campbell's Soup I By Andy Warhol (1968)) This piece is by an American artist, it is one of the many pieces that is considered a leading piece by a leading artist within pop art. But 'can' a print of a tin of Campbell's soup say or be more than a tin of soup. Maybe it does, but to me it just says eat me. And in an after thought, 'if you do eat me now, you'll die.'
But what did it say to the artist or even to you? Well I don't know but what I do know is, that I do not like this piece of pop art. There is nothing within this image that is more thought provoking than 'what I am going to eat later on!'
Second piece (The Robe Following Her - 4 By Jim Dine, oil on canvas (1984-85))
This piece is by another American artist who helped pioneer pop art. He is also from the same show that help make pop art in America, in its early days.
Although this piece is a painting done many years later. In this painting I absorbed and touched by its essence, beauty followed by its grace. It takes on life and it also takes on meaning, it is what it is and it shouts to me.
It shouts 'Come jump into the other dimenstion', it's like what most pop art looks like, comics. Which I suspect he really wasn't trying to do or actually be anything by this painting.
Okay then, in two parts for the rating:
A) 1st piece is given a 1 out of 10 in the art marking, mainly for effort, in my opinion.
And....
B) 2nd piece is given a 9 out of 10. Because it is a marvel, it is a amazing painting and I would hang it on any wall in my house.
Peace out! Craig Cremu Cragus Virgo
